Agar Calculator

Calculate your mix based on water volume. We use a 2% ratio for both agar and sugar.


* 1 ml of water = 1 gram.

Sugar (LME/Corn)

Note: This calculator is best used with grams and ml for precision, but don't worry—using spoons will get you close enough. If you're worried about your ratios, just add a little extra agar for a firmer set.

* Based on 1 tsp ≈ 3g | 1 Tbs = 3 tsp. These measurements are based on my specific agar; yours may vary slightly.

Liquid Culture Calculator

Calculate sugar needed for your LC mix. We provide results for both 2% and 4% ratios.


* 1 ml of water = 1 gram.

Metric Volume: 500 ml

Sugar (2% Ratio)

Weight: 10.0g
Volume: 16.7 ml (or 3.3 tsp / 1.1 Tbs)

Sugar (4% Ratio)

Weight: 20.0g
Volume: 33.3 ml (or 6.7 tsp / 2.2 Tbs)

Note: Always verify your Liquid Culture on agar before using it to inoculate.

Grain Calculator

Estimate dry grain needed for your jars. Based on Feed Corn and Barley (Popcorn is likely similar).

Total Weight: 1000g (~2.20 lbs)

Note: This is based on 200g of dry grain per Quart jar (the standard "Myco Quart").
